Sue Heim's list of problems was excellent, and I liked David Dubin's addition.
I'd like to add a twist to David's complaint about the manager who doesn't know
anything about what you do...How about the manager who doesn't really care?

There are a lot of advantages to working for small companies, as I have all my
working life, that I don't want to give up. However, a related factor has been
that my managers have been either engineers or marketing people. All have known
that manuals need to be done, but have no idea of what type of effort goes into
them, and no desire to learn. They don't care what gets done as long as they
can say they have a manual. They don't realize the breadth of expertise my
position encompasses, and therefore, I frequently feel undervalued.

Some days, I dream of working for someone who knows enough about what I do to
appreciate what I do.
