That's exactly the advice I gave a client last year! And it worked :-)
In addition, I advised them to ask some of the same questions you've
mentioned in previous posts -- what they like best about technical
writing and what they dislike the most.
When one candidate in the running responded that what he disliked
most was having his work edited, they knew he wasn't the writer
they wanted.
Another good question is: What strategies do you use to get information
or feedback from people who are very busy and don't want to take the
time to show you how something works or to answer your questions?
