I must disagree.  I don't think it is ludicrous to start a chapter
on a continuous (odd) page, rather than page 1.

In fact, I really don't
like each chapter to start on page 1.  When I see a table of contents
or index entry that says that the item I am looking for is on
page 5-30, I really don't have any idea where that is in the text.
That doesn't give me a good idea where to look in the book.  I have
to know where chapter 5 starts to find what I am looking for.

If the TOC or index entry says that something is on page 265,
and I know that there are 500 pages in the manual, I can
more easily find what I am looking for.  Numbering each
chapter from page 1 doesn't give me any idea of the total number
of pages in a manual to be able to better tell where to find
something.

I also, however, am fully aware of the maintenance problem
by using continuous numbering when you need to make
changes, insert chapters, etc.  But for the user, I
think that continuous numbering is more helpful.  It is
what we are used to in novels and most other printed
material.
