Thanks to everybody who responded to my post. Most people suggested buying
a refill kit, which I did. For the time being, I'm using the one sold by
Sam's. For $50 you get a new HP cartridge (the big one) plus enough ink to
re-fill the sucker four times. This places the cost of a full ink cartridge
at about $10 a pop. Each full cartridge is good for 500 sheets of paper.
Not too bad, since I've found some bond paper that works almost as well as
the expensive 25% rag stuff HP recommends. But if I could find the right
ink to put in the cartridges myself, that would be even better. One reply
to my post suggested an ink that I haven't tried yet. Monday I'll let
everyone know how it works.
Some may wonder about my eternal quest to save money. After all, I AM a
high-paid Engineering Writer. Since I'm among friends, I'll explain. It's
a habit I've acquired out of necessity. My wife and I have seven kids (two
married <whew!>, one serving as a missionary in the Philippines <$$>, one
getting married in May <$$...$$>, two in college <$$$>, and two in Little
League <$fun$>).
BTW, I don't worry about voiding the HP warranty because my DeskJet Plus is
over five years old and a new one is under $300. The MTBF on the thing is
something like 30,000 hours. It's totally quiet, lightweight, and
dependable. My grandkids will be using it for their homework long after I'm
dead.
Thanks again for all the helpful input!
