Steve Lawrenson asked for a good definition of data management. Since
this term has many and varied meanings, I can only propose an approach
to defining it rather than a definition per se. The approach has the
advantage of working for all other words that don't define well. In
this case, consider the following example:

"Data management comprises the following:
1. Controlling data entry...
2. Ensuring data security...
3. etc. etc."

When in doubt, define by example. This may be a bit longer, but is far
less "wordy" (i.e., incomprensibly convoluted). and has other
benefits. For example, if you're doing marketing writing, you can
state for each point how your product addresses this function or need.
