It's because two of the failsafe levels in composition have been
bypassed.

Reporters ("associate editors" <spit!>) now enter their copy directly
into the composition system, without the "need" for typesetters to key
it in or proofreaders to check it.

If the editors fall down on the job or really don't know when to
use "its", "your" and "their", or their spell-checker tells them
to replace "alot" with "allot" instead of "many", who's to know the
difference anyway? Certainly not the readers, who learn everything they
need to know from watching MTV.

And the end result goes right on the bottom line, since two levels of
skilled craftsmen, the ones who actually do know this stuff, have been
eliminated from the production process.
