As someone who makes a living from legal writing and indexing, I'm a little
chagrined that nobody on this list is yelling: INDEXING IS MORE COMPLICATED
THAN Y'ALL ARE MAKING IT SOUND. Besides the Chicago Manual of Style, there
are several books devoted to indexing, and even one specifically for the
indexing of technical manuals (The Art of Indexing). The best new one is
Nancy Mulvany's _Indexing Books_. The best way to get more information on all
the ins and outs is to read them and to go to gatherings of indexers, like
the ones put on by chapters of the American Society of Indexers. Also try
subscribing to INDEX-L, where solutions to specific problems are discussed.
