The question of copyright for listserv material, web pages, and so forth
is way up in the air. It's often discussed on the cni-copyright list,
which says--

You may join this list at any time by sending this command as an e-mail
note to the Unix-Listprocessor on the Coalition's server (LISTPROC -at- CNI -dot- ORG)

subscribe <listname> <your real name>
e.g. SUBSCRIBE CNI-COPYRIGHT John Doe

The people active on the cni-copyright list are predominantly professionals
in the field.

The Copyright FAQ is available for anonymous FTP from either of the
following two sites:

ftp site: ftp.netcom.com
directory: /pub/carrollt/law/copyright/faq
files: part1-part6

ftp site: rtfm.mit.edu
directory: /pub/usenet/news.answers/law/Copyright-FAQ
files: part1-part6
