another is mailto. In fact, URLs do NOT exclusively apply to the WWW or HTTP,
as someone else alluded to. I can fire up my WebExplorer and simply enter
"mailto:arlen -dot- p -dot- walker -at- jci -dot- com" in the URL entry field to send Arlen an email,
and aside from the fact that I'm using what's primarily a WWW browser to do
it, it's in no way connected to or related to the WWW, nor does it use HTTP
(WebEx packages the text properly and calls SENDMAIL.EXE to transmit it).

Furthermore, I use a port of ncftp (an alternative command-line FTP client)
that will accept standard *nix-type commands (open support.apple.com, to use
Arlen's example), or URL-type formatting
(ftp://support.apple.com/directory/filename.zip if I know the exact directory
and filename I want).

I don't think it really makes a difference either way =)
