because/since

I'm writing the style guide for our very small company. So, I'm now forced to
confront writing situations I normally write my way out of. One of my pet
problems is using because or since.

When I was completing my Technical Communications degree, my
advisor said we should restrict our use of "since" to time-related expressions.
However, the old rule of thumb says not to start a sentence with "because."
Personally, I don't think using "because" is all that weak, but ...

Opinions?
