HTML Authoring for Mere Mortals
a/k/a Making Your Own Home Page on the Web

John L. Sands, the OCSTC Webmeister and Internet Committee Chairperson, will
give a presentation to prime you for authoring your own Web pages at the Nov.
21 meeting of the Orange County Chapter of the Society for Technical
Communication. This discussion will be keyed at the "mere mortal" level, and at
the end, John will produce a completed page for the audience. Although John
will discuss the origin and purposes of the Internet and World Wide Web (WWW),
the main thrust of his presentation will be teaching the basics of SGML, and
specifically its text counterpart known as HTML.

Attendees will participate with John in creating a WWW page starting with ASCII
text which will be parsed into document elements. HTML tags will then be added
to cause a WWW browser to identify the document ID, the Head, the Title, and
the Body. And finally, you will learn to insert hypertext links to imagery,
other pages on your hard disk, and resources at other sites.

You are urged to bring a pencil (with an eraser) and some blank lined notebook
paper. But not to worry, no math will be required and techno-jargon will be
held to a minimum! You will be able to take your page home, enter it into your
word processor, save it as an ASCII file and view it with your WWW browser. If
you are not on the WWW, Internet access software for Windows will be supplied
by Netcom.

We hope that John can "demystify" this discipline and stimulate you to sign up
for his December 2 workshop on HTML Authoring. The location, cost, and
reservations for the workshop will be taken at the meeting or by calling (714)
863-7666.

To make a reservation for this outstanding meeting, call (714) 863-7666. The
meeting will be held at the Marriott Hotel on Von Karman Ave. at the 405 in
Irvine. Reservations must be made by noon on Friday, Nov. 17. Meeting costs
are: $17 for members with a reservation (bring a guest and save $2), $15 for
student members with school IDs, and $20 for walk-ins and non-members. This fee
includes an extensive hors d'oeuvre bar that puts most meals to shame, and
beverages.There will be a $10 fee billed for no-shows.

The Society for Technical Communication is a non-profit organization dedicated
to providing educational programs and networking opportunities in technical
communication for its members and the community. The STC has more than 20,000
members internationally and boasts more than 300 members in the Orange County
Chapter.
