we should use -- "Unix" or "UNIX" -- to refer to the operating system.
Being in AT&T, we have to be especially careful now, because UNIX is no
longer owned by AT&T. Novell bought it, then X/Open bought it.
We use full caps UNIX in *** ALL **** instances. The trade mark credit
we use in our book front matter is:
Rustle, rustle, thump, curse, drawer slam, curse

Feel free to use this. I'm sure legal people would approve the text and
your use of it.
Our legal department went over this with us (pubs and others) and in
no uncertain terms can we use the initial capped version. Generic usage
don't cut any ice with the Judge. UNIX is a fully registered trademark
and as such is worth much money to the owner, X/Open Company Limited.
Just as Kleenex or Caterpillar (tractor) can't be written all lowercase,
UNIX MUST be written all uppercase. That's the law. Period.
You leave your company wide open for lawsuit if you use anything but
UNIX. UNIX UNIX UNIX UNIX UNIX UNIX
We use the circle TM symbol the first time in each chapter, and
thereafter use UNIX without the circle TM for the rest of the chapter.

Dick Dimock Actually working now, at
AT&T Global Information Solutions which may or may not realize I am
actually working, in
El Segundo, CA Where the survivors have been reorganized into
neater rows for easier identification next time.
We have more work and fewer people, so I watch
my Techwr-l mail slide by in hundreds, capture
all to floppy and hope to read someday.
El Segundo is doing fine, thanks, and the view
is about the same. Power lines below my window
sizzle with corona discharge in the fog. Chevron
put on a helluva show, with a hundred-foot
flame outta one stack, a several minute burst
that left a black column drifting in our
(heh) pristine air.
