Beginning of job announcement -------------------------------

Texas Tech University announces a tenure-track position for an assistant
professor in technical communication and rhetoric, beginning in the fall of
1996. The Ph.D. is required; teaching experience and publication are
desired. Candidates who can help develop courses in multimedia or project
management will have an advantage, but the department welcomes applicants
with all specializations in technical communication and rhetoric and will
hire the best qualified candidate.

Texas Tech University offers programs in technical communication and
rhetoric at the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. levels. Specific degree programs are
as follows:
        * B.A. in English, Technical Communication Specialization
        * M.A. in Technical Communication
        * M.A. in English, Rhetoric Specialization
        * Ph.D. in Technical Communication and Rhetoric
        * Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric Specialization

Technical writing has been taught at Texas Tech since 1927, and a
specialization for undergraduates was established in the mid-1970s. A
rhetoric specialization within the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English was
established in the mid-1980s, and the Master of Arts in Technical
Communication and Ph.D. in Technical Communication and Rhetoric were
introduced in 1993. Approximately 100 undergraduate students and 25
graduate students major or minor in technical communication and rhetoric,
and an undergraduate service program reaches 1,000 students in technical
communication.

Courses include report and proposal writing, editing, document design,
software and hardware writing, research methods, computers in composition,
and various courses in rhetorical theory. As part of their technical
communication courses, students produce various print documents as well as
online documentation and Web pages. Three networked computer classrooms
serve the writing programs, and students can access the Internet, World
Wide Web, and library catalogs through the classroom computers.

The community of students and faculty is congenial and supportive, and the
faculty offer students personal attention and mentoring. A number of
graduate students, with the encouragement of their professors, present at
professional conferences and are active professionally in other ways.

Texas Tech University is a multipurpose research university with a School
of Medicine and School of Law. At the undergraduate level, the College of
Arts and Sciences is the largest of six colleges. Total university
enrollment is about 25,000.

Lubbock has a population of nearly 200,000 and offers many benefits of a
city without the congestion. Winters are mild, and the days are sunny.
