For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
As writers, I think we all know what's going on in this discussion of--
take your pick--1) "strong" language (positive connotation) or 2)
"vulgar" language (negative connotation).
Some of us use it a lot, some of us use it a little, few of us (if any) use it
not at all. Most of us have an opinion about its place, or in other words,
its appropriateness for the audience we're writing or talking to. In this
forum, we don't know the audience really all that well. We only know
that we're writing to other technical communicators.
I'm on the side of avoiding its use in discussions of technical writing. I
don't see it as appropriate to this audience. I myself don't like it. So,
those of you who have expressed yourselves otherwise, put me with
the people who have been labeled "stupid," and sign me,
Miss Grundy ;-)
