Continuing the thread on favorite word processing/desktop publishing
programs, my first real experience with both was six years ago at my
college newspaper, where we used WordPerfect 5.0 for text entry, then
imported to Ventura 2.0 for typesetting and page layouts. Once I
learned the system, I couldn't imagine ever doing it any other way.
When I had to learn FrameMaker 4.0 at my current software
documentation position, I longed for the old system I used in college,
as primitive as it was in retrospect. But now that I know Frame, I
can't imagine ever having done it another way. A few years from now,
I'll probably be saying that about some other program.
So I agree, it's not always how good the program is, but how familiar
we have become with it. And to resurrect a thread from a few weeks
back (forgive me), our ability to rapidly become familiar with a
software package we hadn't used before is an extremely valuable asset
in this field.
