TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I've done screen captures for MSWindows and UNIX applications.
For windows, I had two options. First, I tried Corel's screen capture
utility,
but the quality of the captures was *horrible.* The images all came out
with cross-hatched colors that obscured text. Then, I decided to simply
use the PrintScreen key and (no laughing out there) MSPaint. Yes, MSPaint:
the default graphics program that comes with every Windows package.
The PrintScreen captures came out beautifully crisp, and it was simply
fastest to load them into Paint. Because it's a small program, there are
virtually no delays in pasting, manipulating, or saving the BMP image.
Simply clip out the part you want, and you're on your way. If you want
more details on this convoluted but effective method, drop me a line.
I never did find a very graceful utility to help with UNIX screen captures.
I ended up using a method similar to MS Windows captures, which was
to print the screen and paste it into any graphics program. A UNIX
administrator at your site should be able to tell you which UNIX print
commands are available to capture the screens.
Good luck, and let me know what you decided to do.
