In response to Amy, who suggests that we're born with
language skills...

It would seem more feasible to me to say that we're
born with the capacity to acquire language skills.
Nevertheless, I believe infants do LEARN to speak, as
they hear their parents, the radio, etc. If this is so,
then children would probably pick up sound patterns
and such, and associate them with certain situations,
moods, etc. The born-with-it theory just doesn't hold
water to me... it doesn't seem to account for different
languages that have extemely differnt conventions for both
grammar and inflection.

Just my opinion... Margie (P.S. Sorry for incorrect spelling.)
