One of the best sources of information for this type of information
is William Horton's book--Illustrating Computer Documentation: The
Art of Presenting Information Graphically on Paper and Online. We
used it in a tech writing course on writing documentation. It is
filled with examples that demonstrate his points. It was 313 pages
and cost $32.95 several years ago. I love the book, and refer to it
often.
