It depends on the field and I haven't done a survey, but North American
physicians are nowadays required to attend updating courses (that's apart
from special certification for each of a wide range of specialities).
Lawyers have to spend a lot of time keeping up with new legislation and,
since most of the US and Canada) are Common Law jurisdictions, following
decisions and their reasons.
