Counting Noses

I made a mini survey to estimate tech writers on staff versus those
freelancing. As of now, I have received 20 responses. 12 were from those on
staff, the remaining 8 were freelancers. A couple of those on staff were
actually job shoppers--temps--who considered themselves captive because they
were on someone's payroll. (In my time in tech writing, job shoppers (temps)
considered themselves to be free agents, not captive.) That's about 40%
freelance, although there is no way to know from this count if that is a
representative figure for all tech writers who frequent this forum.

If I continue to get responses, I will furnish an update.
