TECHWR-L's Greetings from St. Louis where we have the Great One to talk
about now!!! :-)

Got a question or situation that I'd like some input on:

We have a software development shop here that I support, and I am in the
process of designing a central documentation system to store items such as
process templates, product documents, support information etc. It will
have clients on both the UNIX and Windows sides of the world... and the
documents will either come from FRAME (4 for UNIX or 5 for Windows) or Word
(2.0, 6.0 and 7.0).

We have been heading down the PDF road to put them together on one
platform... but we might need to edit the documents at some time. We're
also discussing an internal Web Site and putting the PDF's on it, as well
as Frame Docs, Word Docs, and even HTML-converted documents from the above
as well. (are you all getting all of this?)

I'd like to hear from anyone who's done this sort of thing (MCA you don't
count!!!) especially putting documents/PDF's on an internal Web Site.

From a starting point, issues that concern me include:

* what to do with "living" documents since you cannot edit a PDF file
* how do you keep version control of these living documents automatically
(and your PDF files for that matter)
* have you had success with any automation of the back-end processing (for
PDF: Cataloging, Distilling and for HTML:"one-button" converters, etc.)
* what kind of web-server product handles this type of documentation
distribution best
* anything else I should look out for?

Thanks for your help in advance...
