Mary and other colleagues:
Unless Microsoft has put a bandaid on their master document feature in
the past year, you are out of luck. You would be better served by
numbering within chapters and building your index on that basis before
merging the whole thing into one document.
Just about a year ago I was involved in a project requiring a similar
master document treatment. When we couldn't make it work, we called MS
tech support. They didn't know either. So what's new?
