Hi all. I am the one technical writer at Otsuka Electronics, a manufacturer
of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) instruments. I publish a library of
manuals using FrameMaker on a Macintosh computer. My questions: (1) Are
there any Mac programs out there that simplify the processes of creating an
index. (2) Are there any good books about designing indexes for technical
documents.

I find the indexing tools in FrameMaker rather difficult to use. For one
thing, it is easy to accidentally delete the non-printing index markers
while editing. In addition, one must develop the overall hierarchy of the
index prior to inserting the markers.

I once heard of a program that allows one to enter subjects and page
numbers while reading a manual. The program provided tools for organizing
these subjects into a hierarchy and creating an index. Unfortunately this
program was not commercially available.

Comments? Suggestions? Thanks.
