I thought "separating the wheat from the chaff" was proverbial. I no longer
have the Oxford Dict. of Proverbs. The ODQ (4th edition) only traces it back
to Elbert Hubbard who wrote:

"Editor: a person employed by a newspaper, whose business it is to separate
the wheat from the chaff, and to see that the chaff is printed." -- _The
Roycroft Dictionary_ (1914) p. 46
