Problem: Word 5.1 and word spacing

Subject: Problem: Word 5.1 and word spacing

Here's the kind of problem that makes tech writers go grey faster than the
average person, in my own unscientific short non-electronic survey :-)

A book is in Word 5.1 on the Mac, body copy set in Optima 9 pt justified
(it's not my work, it's a colleague's).

He needs to change one word on one page and print it, so he opens the file
and finds that the words have shifted. In other words, the inter word
spacing seems to have changed so the actual word (okay, the typo) he has to
correct is in a different location. The work around is easy -- just force a
page break, but has anyone (1) a reason and (2) a solution.

Please respond to me privately jfrancuz -at- amug -dot- org
tia,
just another lurker who missed out on those great stickers in Seattle.
