**CALL FOR PAPERS**

The Practical Conference on Communication (PCOC) features professionals
from throughout the United States who share their communications
experience, insights, methods, and research.

PCOC is the longest running two-day regional conference in STC. In
celebration of the 20th anniversary, this year PCOC will be held for three
days. The first two days will contain presenations on a variety of topics
ranging from practical writing and editing tips to workplace strategies to
the Internet and the World Wide Web. The third day will focus on
freelancing, contracting, and independent consulting.

You are invited to share your expertise at the 20th annual PCOC, to be held
in Knoxville, Tennessee, October 17 to 19, 1996. STC/ETC is accepting
proposals for 30-, 60-, or 90-minute presenations or workshops on a variety
of technical communication subjects.

*Submissions*
Please submit a 100-word abstract of your proposed presentation or a
one-page description of your proposed workshop (including plans for group
activities). Also, please provide a brief autobiography. Send submission
information (see following) and your proposal by June 1. Presenters will
be notified of acceptance by July 15 and will receive registration
information and proceedings paper instructions at that time. The program
managers encourage potential speakers to call or e-mail with ideas and
questions before submitting an abstract.

*Submission Information*
Please include the following: name, day phone, address, evening phone,
e-mail address, summer address/phone (if different than above),
presentation type (workshop or presentation) and length, subject, and A/V
equipment needed.

*PCOC Presenters Perks*
Presenters can have their paper published in the conference proceedings and
will receive two copies of the proceedings. They will receive feedback on
presenations in the form of evaluations from the attendees. Presenters
also receive at least a 20 percent discount off the regular registration
rate (all presenters must register for the conference).

*Possible Topics*
Practical skills involving writing and editing, management, training,
abstracting/translation, public relations/marketing, and design, layout,
and visual arts.

Computer skills including usabilty testing, software reviews, hypermedia
and multimedia, and publishing on the World Wide Web.

Professional/career development skills like job hunting strategies,
interviewing tips, resume/cover letter writing, and portfolio development.

Educational topics such as continuing education opportunities and
communications research.

Freelancing, contracting and independent consulting issues such as
estimating, marketing, telecommuting, getting started, and finding your
niche.
