You're missing the point. Make an experimental HTML page with
various kinds of dashes, then view them on a non-Windows browser,
especially a UNIX flavor of Netscape.

Several months ago, a colleague and I put sections of a client's
manual on their intranet. We had discovered that our Alt-0151
dashes "worked" (for us), so we used them. When I viewed the
results on a programmer's AIX terminal, I was surprised to find
that my dashes had disappeared.

It might seem like a throw-back to typewriters (type-whaters?),
but I'd stick to --.
