Another approach just occurred to me for the dilemma of putting chapter #s
with page #s. I've used the heading numbering approach, but it can be very
clumsy.

An alternative:

Make the number for each chapter a bookmark (Edit -> Bookmark <give it a
name> -> Add). Then, for the page #s in each chapter, use the Insert ->
Cross reference -> Bookmark <select the right one> -> Bookmark Text) to put
the chapter # in.

A caveat: Be careful when you change the chapter # in the heading. It's all
too easy to blow away the old one *and* the bookmark marking. To avoid that,
Tools -> Options -> View -> Bookmarks, which will put square brackets around
all your bookmarks. Highlight the contents of the appropriate bookmark and
overwrite it.

And that's the whole megilla, the whole nine yards, the entire enchilada
(not including the combination platter), and everything else. But not
necessarily lock, stock, and barrel. (For trivia fans, "lock, stock, and
barrel" referred to an entire rifle - the lock, or action, the wooden stock,
and the barrel.)
