Consider yourself lucky. I attended a high-tech job fair a week and a
half ago. The overwhelming majority of the ~40 companies there were
computer consulting firms, and only two or three said they hired
technical writers.

I asked a few of them who wrote their documentation. Most of their
answers ran along the lines of "Our programmers do it -- and a fine
job they do, too!" I resisted the urge to proselytize; it wasn't the
right venue.

My lament is this: Too much of the world is *still* unaware of our
collective talent.
