Colin Wheildon's _Type & Layout_ (1995, Strathmoor Press; ISBN
0-9624891-5-8) contains the results of a the results of his nine-year
study on the effects of typography and design on a reader's
understanding of printed material. One of the study's results showed
that readers have better comprehension of material printed in serif
type than sans serif type.

His printed samples were not documentation; they were magazine-type
articles. Regardless, it might provide the backup you're looking for.

I wrote a summary/critique of the book, which I posted to the list in
January. If anyone is interested in a copy, contact me privately.
