I read somewhere that the idea that "'s" is a
contraction of "his" is a myth. A couple of
centuries ago, people thought it looked nicely
impressive and formal to do the back-formation,
like "Dr. Dan Dentist, his office," but they
were going backward to a form that in fact had
never existed.
Unless, of course, the idea that it's
a myth is a myth. But the possessive "s"
exist in German too, and in German "his"
is "sein".
