Subject:GUI version of LaTex From:Miles Ehrlich <mehrlich -at- COMPUTER -dot- ORG> Date:Wed, 10 Jul 1996 10:53:34 EST
The GUI version of LaTex is Scientific Word, which is produced by TCI
Software Research, a division of Brooks/Cole Publishing. Scientific
Word is _part_ of Scientific WorkPlace, a program that includes the
Maple mathematical software package integrated with the LaTex-based
text processor. However Scientific Word is also available without the
WorkPlace math capabilities.
I have not used Sci Word myself but for a while I followed the
listserv group that discusses it. Many users are quite satisfied and
really like having a GUI front end to LaTex. Some are a little
dissatisfied with occasional incompatibilities between Sci Word and
vanilla LaTex documents, which makes it harder than they thought it
would be at times to pass documents back and forth to other LaTex
users. The current version of Sci Word, 2.5, seems to be a fairly
major improvement but of course there are still bugs. The company
seems to have a loyal following and to be responsive to users. Sci
Word is available for Windows and Mac. More info is at
