In response to Patty Ewy's questions about the organization of technical
writing groups:
I work for a software company. The marketing group with writers are separate
from the technical writers, who write product documentation and online Help.
There is a third group of which I am part, Instructional Design. We write
training materials that our consultants use to train clients in the use of the
software.
There is always talk of putting the Documentation and Instructional Design
groups together. But we really need to interact with different people. Doc
needs to be close to engineering and development, while Instructional Design is
more client-oriented and we need to be closer to the consultants who work with
the clients.
