All the above terms need to be double-checked for local use when changing
languages or countries sharing(!) a common language.

I come from the U.K. where:

gas is what you get when you boil a liquid.
North Sea Gas replaced Coal Gas for cooking, etc. It may have since
been renamed natural gas, but that would be after 1973.
gasoline would be understood, but not used, by the many who watch
U.S. films and TV shows
petrol is what cars run on.
kerosene isn't a word in everyday use. People who recognise it would
probably equate it with paraffin.
paraffin is used in heaters and cookers in country areas which lack
(North Sea) gas.

Readers may compare their own usages. U.K. readers will doubtless correct my
imperfect and out-of-date recollections.
