BAD idea. Word's Master document feature is a kludge.
There are other ways to create large books with Word.
The basic ideas are:

1. Keep each chapter in a separate file. If a chapter
has a lot of art or a lot of pages, consider breaking
it into two files (chap1a.doc & chap1b.doc).

2. Use fields to automate chapter numbering and
cross-references.

3. Use the HEADING 1-9 styles (helps with TOC).

4. Use RD fields to build the TOC and Index across
several files.

5. Use the same stylesheet (template) for all the files.
