Thanks to everyone who answered my cries for help (you guys are *fast*!)
on how to continuing numbering steps sequentially if you interrupt them
with a different style.

It turns out that you *can* do this manually with the Format>Bullets and
Numbering>Modify command. For some reason my Word 6 version wouldn't do
it. I'd set the numbering higher and it would still remain at step 1.
Infuriating! So I tried my Word 7 version (it's a long story on why I
didn't try this before asking...) and it *worked*!

I feel much better now, thanks. I'm posting this publicly on the
assumption that other people have had the same problem. Like Bev, for
instance!
