Hi Alex,

You recently stated that you are having problems with Acrobat Catalog
and WinNT. I've just conquered the same problem, but it had another
twist. I wouldn't be too worried about WinNT. The problem I had was
with Windows 3.1 or Windows 3.11 (for workgroups). Windows 3.1 or 3.11
doesn't recognize lowercase filenames at all. Therefore, if any of the
Acrobat files are .pdf they will not be recognized. All of them must be
.PDF files or it simply won't work. Period.

I have opened numerous tickets at Adobe Technical Support and the bottom
line was the all of the files must be in the 8.3 type. In other words,
if they're not FILENAME.PDF it won't work. Adobe claims that it will
work this way in Unix, so I'd give it a try. Just make sure that ALL
files on the disk are in the 8.3 type and there shouldn't be a problem
for any platform.

Two other problems that I had with putting the CDs together; Windows 3.1
doesn't accept more than 250 files in a directory. If you have more
than 250 files, split them up into subdirectories. Also, the fewer
files you have on the disk the faster it will search; if you have
200,000 pages of doc in 1000 separate files it will be slower than
having 300,000 pages of doc in 100 files.

Lastly, once you have Catalog'ed the .PDF files, don't move the Index
.PDX file whatever you do; if it is moved it won't work.

Bottom line: do exactly what the manual says to do and there won't be a
problem with your CDs or the searching; try to change it ever so
slightly and it won't work. Acrobat is VERY finnicky(sp?) and if every
base is not covered, the CD won't work.

Of course, let me know if there's any other problems you're having with
Adobe Acrobat. Lord knows I've probably come across it (and resolved
it).

Regards,
