Expanding Horizons
We're midway through "the `90s," heading for the excitement and
challenges of a new century.
Today's communicators and students will be the pioneers of the technical
communication field as we enter the 21st century.
The Intermountain Chapter cordially invites you to join us in Salt Lake City
this fall to explore the expanding horizons of technical communication.

We'll travel back to 1896 at our opening event--a masquerade ball,
celebrating Utah's Centennial Year.

Then, during the conference we'll explore the past, present, and future
as we share and speculate about the scope of technical communication
in the year 2000 and beyond.

Conference Theme
"Pioneering Technical Communication in the 21st Century" will be
developed throughout the conference in such sessions as:

Using Graphical Analysis of Media to Enhance their Definitions with David
Hailey--This multimedia presentation will include a discussion of graphing
different media relative to each other, permitting a fairly comprehensive
and interactive set of definitions that allow us to move away from the
argument that hypermedia is hypertext with "bells and whistles."

A Primer: Basic Indexing Techniques with Lori Lathrop--This workshop is
for technical writers who want to know how to evaluate the usability,
exhaustivity, and quality of an index for both printed and online
documents.

The Human Side of Technology with Robert Tippetts--What are we to do
with messy human feelings, perceptions, ambitions, assumptions, and
biases in a digital world of increasing precision and capability?

Single-Source Architecture with Fred Holmes and Ben Martin--An
Empirical Evaluation of how J. D. Edwards achieved a single-source
architecture that catalogs information at the paragraph,
task, chapter, and book levels.

Making the Transition from Technical to Marketing Communications with
Dave Politis--This presentation will examine the current opportunities for
marketing communicators, the challenges confronting independent
contractors, the skills needed by marketing communicators, and ideas
and issues associated with self-promotion.

The Copywriter's Rhetorical Role within the Corporation with Nathan
Jackson--This presentation will discuss how copywriters use rhetorical
actions in collaborative settings to create ethical, user-centered
communication.

Technical Documentation for the `90's-: Integrating HTML with Angelique
Herran--An Empirical Study of the creation of a software tool that would
translate electrical library symbol information from one format to another
used by the VeriBest Synthesis Engine.

Chapter Leader's Workshop
On Sunday, November 3, the Chapter Leader's Workshop will be led by
STC's Region 7 Director-Sponsor, Laura Ramsey. The cost for this
half-day workshop is $25, including breakfast.
