More intranet than you wanted to know

I thank David, John, and Geoff for their notes to the list and me on the
physical aspects of an intranet. My intent was to say that an intranet is
more that its wires; it is rather a way of sharing information.

I'll be so bold as to quote from Tobin Anthony's "Building and Maintaining
an Intranet with the Macintosh":

>Your Intranet is less about wiring up computers to talk with one another
and more about empowering your organization with new tools and capabilities
beyond what's currently available ... Some services that major companies
have provided on their Intranets include: web forms to allow employees to
update personnel information..; databases linked with web pages to manage
internal paperwork, as well as collaboration on corporate documents;
videoconferences to allow users to communicate in real time with users
throughout the company or throughout the world....<

And while Intranets will not necessarily be a delivery medium for clients, I
see technical writers being a necessary part of the "building and
maintenance" of this new communication methodology.

I've never failed to make my opinions my own. I won't stop now.
