I dabbled with this back in the late 80's while working for IBM. My job was to maintain documentation on a large set of internal development and tracking tools. The document source files resided in a central location available to all. Sometimes developers would copy chunks of documents and change them techically. Then I would make the changes permanent, editing and rewriting as necessary. Sometimes developers would ask me to write the changes. Overall, the system worked pretty well.

Here's some of the issues that came up:

* Document ownership: who has ultimate authority to release a doc for publication?

* Must all technical changes be subject to editing/rewriting/enhancing?

* What happens to deleted material? How is it recovered if someone else deems that it should not have been deleted?

* How does resource sharing function? Changes by several "editors" to multiple copies of the same material need to be merged. How can that be managed better?

* How are conflicting revisions resolved?

I'd be very interested in seeing any research you've done. Send me info, please.

Regards...Kris
