Stephanie,

My plan of attack here would be to build documents directly in HTML, and
tell him and his group that they can do what the like with those files.

The typical intranet is started more or less on the sly... without a lot
of formal approval, groups typically just start doing it and then
hammer out the process as it goes along.

In a company the size and position of Micron, you should have the
freedom and the technology to react to this. I think it is simple. Get
your documents to HTML. Convert them yourself to HTML before he and his
group has a chance to see them or do anything with them. Use Help to
HTML, Internet Assistant, Web Publisher... just crank them out in your
group. As tech comms, you're going to have a better idea of how to
make the document usable right? :-) So, in the immortal words of
Bela Karolyi... "you can do it!" By publishing in HTML as a
"value-added option" you will circumvent the need he's running around
saying exists. Before he realizes it, his group will return to the
"file manager" role, and you again will be in control of content. And
from your email, that's what it sounds like you want.

Hate to be so devious... but if you look at the brief but extensively
documented history of intranets... they almost all have an element of
"corporate creativity" in their inception. You're now at the "turf
battle stage" and in a "battle," you do what it takes, within the
guidelines of business ethics of course. Again, you're group's efforts
are simply to provide a "value-added"... nothing more.

My $.02 worth... any other thoughts from anyone out there? D. Dimock,
haven't heard from you in a while... I think you'd have something to say
here... Besides... we'd all like to know about the happenings in El
Segundo :-)

cheers,
