I was going to post this privately, but it occurred to me that there might be
others who are interested.
Our technical/professional writing program also requires internship--one year,
part time. But our grad program is different (this is the part that I thought
others might find interesting). We focus on recruiting working professionals
as graduate students, so internships are basically irrelevant as an
opportunity to become familiar with the workplace. Instead, we have a one
semester internship where the student examines a specific problem in his or
her workplace. They might examine ISO-9000 or political issues in their
workplace or similar topics they find important. Many of the issues that come
up every day on this discussion group would apply for an internship topic.
As you might imagine, portfolios are also handled differently. Under grads
are expected to produce a portfolio of professional quality work that includes
help files, tutorials, instruction sets, proposals, visual design samples, and
publications management projects (a book or magazine). Grad students are
required to produce portfolios that contain real-world, professional projects,
with essays (instead of a thesis) defending their work.
