I would like to get
some opinions on wages. If there are any Canadians, what are the going
rates in Canada...and for those in the great USA, what would you consider
good starting wages and upwards...

The Society for Technical Communication (STC) publishes a "Salary Survey" you
might find helpful (the last one was Sept. 96). Even though I think you're
asking about rates for contracting or free-lance work, the Salary Survey will
give you an idea of salaries for permanent positions, and you can use that as a
starting point to extrapolate an hourly rate.
The survey is helpful because it provides base and mean salaries by employment
level, education level, industry, sex, age, and years of experience; and it
addresses different regions in both the U.S. and Canada. It's also good
information for anyone who is job hunting or negotiating salary. You can
contact STC at 703-522-4114.
