I too worked for years without experiencing any problems. Then I fell and
broke my hand in 4 places and immediately had numbness. Four years and 2
surgeries later, I still have problems.
As for violinists, they do suffer from repetitive stress injuries. I know
several concert violinists who've had multiple median release surgeries.
They are more likely to suffer from DeQuerevain Syndrome, an inflamation of
the the tendons running from your thumb to your elbow.
