We have an established program of hiring interns and training them to do
technical writing, among other things. Our year-long curriculum is one
we are very proud of, and it guarantees that newcomers either learn the
required skills or demonstrate before we've invested too much in them
that they can't make the grade. Interns are told they have one year in
which to work themselves out of intern status and into another job in
the company (which can be Technical Writer, Project Manager, or some
other special title). In that year, they work side by side with more
experienced people on our projects for various clients, so they get a
good feel for the realities of this business.
