Technical writing requires creativity, otherwise the enginers could do
it. In a documentation project there are usually multiple, conflciting
parameters, with no optimal solution to any given problem. This requires
intuition, experience and innovative approaches.
The trouble is, that it's not the kind of creativity that makes people
go "Whoa, that's way cool!" If you write a really good manual, everybody
will just take it for granted, and never think about what it took to
create the thing. If you write a stodgy, cook-book style manual, most
people won't notice either, because they don't have a standard of
comaprison.
So, if you're looking for a job where you can apply your creativity,
techwriting may be right for you, just don't expect it to be much
appreciated.
