I find that I often MUST have a computer that is at least reasonably close
to the cutting edge.

I usually run the soon-to-be-released software (or install the new
hardware) on my own machine, so I can test it as I am writing the manual
that will document it. Often, the new product won't work in an older
machine.

Sometimes my client wants the manual written using a software version that
only runs on newer machines.
