Alexia actually posted a very nice summary of the "contacts by
company"-only idea.

Rebecca's full post discussed her fear (widely held, I think) that a
list with comments of any kind is far too susceptible to abuse to be
useful. People aren't always circumspect in their opinions (this list
proves that, doesn't it?) and even worse, there's always (more than) a
few who really get off on the power of trashing someone they don't like.
What people say privately, however, is left to the hearer to analyze
(as Alexia pointed out).

This thread has also brought up some discussion on what to do if you're
screwed and how to watch for warning signs of bad employers.
Mitch--maybe a reference site could also collect this
information--encouraging people not to rely solely on what the personal
references say.
