Peggy Smith wrote a book on proofreading. It is the process of
comparing an original manuscript (usually hand-written) with the
typeset copy. Its application is mainly in the publishing industry
(according to P. Smith), to ensure the typesetter did not omit or
introduce things into the author's text.
The book is "Mark My Words - Instruction and Practice in Proofreading"
from Editorial Experts, Inc. 1989.
I used this book in a Technical Editing course, and it helped me with my
pre-tech writing job as a technical editor in a computer company.
