Having spent Memorial Day weekend nose down in a large stack of CBT
articles, I can point out that the use of the word "author" is
widespread in the CBT/IBT tools-producing part of the software industry.
Note that Macromedia's Authorware Professional, IconAuthor, and Allen
Communications' Quest focus on helping a trainer "author" materials.
And that when people who do technical training for a living talk about
developing the material they intend to teach, they frequently use the
verb "author" instead of "write."
This doesn't make the use of the word correct, but it is a case of
sub-industry jargon taking over and giving new meaning to a word.
